چکیده

Sculptured surfaces are relatively difficult to machine due to their complex geometry. Sculptured surface machining primarily has two stages, the first being roughing and the other being finishing. The current work focuses on generating tool paths for the finishing operation. Given any arbitrary sculptured surface, G&M machine codes have been generated to machine that surface using ball-end milling cutters on a 3-axis CNC machine. Tool path planning has been done on the offset surface. Iso-planar zig-zag toolpaths, due to their robustness and simplicity, have been generated. The generated tool paths comply to a certain tolerance and surface finish specified on the surface. Tool holder collision detection has been done to help select the appropriate tool. The input is a solid model of the surface in .SAT format while the output is a text file containing the machine code. Examples are presented to validate the algorithm.

Toward the Automation of the Plunge Milling Strategy for Roughing Sculptured Surfaces from Stl Models

Part with sculptured surfaces is obtained in three stages: roughing, semi-finishing and finishing. The roughing operation consists in using flat end tools or fillet end tools on sequential horizontal cutting planes to remove the most material from the raw part as rapidly as possible using “Parallel Planes” or “Offset Contours” machining strategy. When roughing deep parts, radial cutting forces,...

Automatic Tool Path Generation for Multi-axis Machining Automatic Tool Path Generation for Multi-axis Machining Chapter 4: Tool Path Generation Strategy

We present a novel approach to CAD/CAM integration for multi-axis machining. Instead of redefining the workpiece in terms of machining features, we generate tool paths directly by analyzing the accessibility of the surface of the part. This eliminates the problem of feature extraction. We envision this as the core strategy of a new direct and seamless CAD/ CAM system. We perform the accessibili...

-axis CNC machining of sculptured parts

As an innovative and cost-effective method for carrying out multiple-axis CNC machining, 3 1 2 1 2 -axis CNC machining technique adds an automatic indexing/rotary table with two additional discrete rotations to a regular 3-axis CNC machine, to improve its ability and efficiency for machining complex sculptured parts. In this work, a new tool path generation method to automatically subdivide a c...

Effects of Surface Topography on Formation of Zig-zag Defects in Ssflc Devices

The cause for wide variations in the zig-zag defect density in SSFLC devices using the same alignment layer material is investigated. In this paper, we show how the topography of the surface layer due to imperfect coating techniques and materials promotes the formation of zig-zag defects. We show that if the alignment surface slope is greater than the pretilt, high densities of zig-zag defects ...

Some relations between Kekule structure and Morgan-Voyce polynomials

In this paper, Kekule structures of benzenoid chains are considered. It has been shown that the coefficients of a B_n (x) Morgan-Voyce polynomial equal to the number of k-matchings (m(G,k)) of a path graph which has N=2n+1 points. Furtermore, two relations are obtained between regularly zig-zag nonbranched catacondensed benzenid chains and Morgan-Voyce polynomials and between regularly zig-zag ...
